What Paint Finish Works Best For Your Interior Painting Project?

Repainting one or all of the rooms in your house is an excellent way to update your home while giving it a whole new appeal. You may think that picking the paint colors out will be your greatest obstacle, but there's one other factor in painting that you need to consider — the finish.

Whether you want your rooms to look glossy and gleaming or more subdued and matte, the finish you choose for your indoor painting projects can make all the difference in the overall appearance of your results. Once you've let the paint dry, you can't go back over the walls again, so it's best to not only understand the hues you choose for each room, but to know what each finish means and how it is intended to be used as well.

Here is a guide to help you understand some of the types of paint finishes available for interior painting and how they can benefit various colors or rooms of your home. You can make the most confident painting choice for your project this way, no matter what rooms you wish to redesign with color.

Flat Finish

As the name implies, paint that has a flat finish has little to no sheen to it when dried. It has more of a matte effect, which is ideal for rooms where walls are uneven or where cracks, dents or chipping are present.

A flat finish is excellent when you are painting with dark, rich hues, as the matte tone of the paint does not detract from the hue's intended color via light reflection. Paint with a flat finish in small rooms when you're using bold colors such as magenta, navy, charcoal, hunter green, black, or royal purple.

Matte Finish

If you want to paint your room with a subtle hint of reflective qualities, then opt for matte finish instead of flat. Matte has a very slight sheen, making it the ideal flatter paint finish for larger rooms of any bold color.

Satin Finish

For a soft sheen that looks velvety smooth to the touch, you want to opt for a satin finish. Satin finishes work best with pastel hues or bright white colors to bring them to life in any room, large or small. This comforting finish is ideal for bedrooms and gathering areas. If you opt for a neutral tone in your home, such as tan, eggshell white, or even a seagull gray, keep a satin finish in mind.

Semi-Gloss Finish

As the name implies, this type of finish carries a glossy effect to reflect ample light. Use this type of finish in small rooms you want to appear brighter, or in rooms where you are using a very vivid color. Semi-gloss finishes are easy to clean, making them a wise choice for painting in kitchens, bathrooms and dining areas.

High Gloss Finish

If you want a very shiny finish in your home, don't be afraid to go with a high-gloss. A high-gloss finish is an excellent choice for very bold primary colors, such as neon green, vibrant yellow or a very bold pink. A high-gloss can also bring out classic white in modern ways to give your home a bright, welcoming appeal.

There are other types of paint finishes you can choose from to complement your home best. Talk to your interior painter about the color spectrum you are working with and the type of appeal you want each room to have so they can help you choose the best paint finish for each room.
