The 3-Step Process Painters Use to Remove Texture and Refinish Walls

Are you tired of the textured walls and ceilings in your home? Adding texture to walls was highly trendy in the past, but a lot of people who live with textured walls grow tired of it. If you want a new look for your home, hire a painting and decorating company to remove the texture and repaint your walls. A professional painter will complete the following steps to achieve the look you want.

Step 1: Remove The Texture

f you have tried to remove the texture from walls, you probably understand how difficult and time-consuming this is. This process is hard to do and is extremely messy, which is why you should let a professional do it.

Painters typically wet the walls first and then remove the texture by scraping it off. Before they begin, they will place drop cloths over everything in the rooms to make cleaning up after the job a little easier. You should expect to see a lot of dust in your home during the project and after the painters finish the job, but it's important to know that there really is no easy, clean way to remove the texture from walls.

Fortunately, if you hire this out, the painting company will deal with the mess and the labor involved in the process.

Step 2: Prepare The Walls

The second step of the process is preparing the walls. This step is extremely important because the walls underneath the texture might have a lot of imperfections on them. If the painter doesn't take the time to fix these imperfections, you will see them after the painting is complete.

To prepare the walls, the painter will use several different types of tools and materials. The main material needed for this is drywall compound. The painter will insert the compound into all the visible cracks, holes and crevices on the walls. If a corner of a wall is not perfectly straight, they will apply the compound to the wall to even it out. The painters may also scrape walls if they discover flaky paint or any other debris on the walls.

After the compound dries and the scraping is complete, the painters will sand the walls so they are even and smooth. If the walls look good after doing this, they can move on to the final step in the process.

Step 3: Finish The Walls

The final step is painting the walls if this is what you choose. A fresh coat of paint on walls can look great, especially after removing texture, but painting is not the only option you have. Painting companies offer other types of services, and they can help you decide which type is right for you. Here are several options you could consider:

  • Patterns - Professional painters can create a variety of different looks on your walls and painting patterns is one option. If you want a checkerboard wall, they could do this with two colors of paint. They could also paint stripes on your walls and other types of pictures or shapes.
  • Graining - After getting the texture removed, you probably would not want any type of finish that resembles texture; however, you might want to consider graining. This is a process that involves painting walls in a way that makes them look like real wood.
  • Painted Chair Rail - Another idea is painting a chair rail on your walls. After that, they could paint different colors above and below the painted chair rail.
There are endless options to choose from, and you can choose whichever colors or designs you like.
